State Picks Firm for Audit of $1/2 Billion Mistakes

by Doug on June 5, 2012

Couple hundred million here, couple hundred million there, and eventually lawmakers are going to decide to take a closer look. That’s what’s happening with the state government. Niki Kelly reports that the State is going to hire Deloitte to take a look at the $500 million in “financial miscues” by the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Instead of financial miscues, I think we should call them “whoopsies”.

Miscue? Seriously? Makes me wonder if this was Niki Kelly’s word choice or taken straight from a press release.

Why is OMB Director Adam Horst in charge of an audit of his own work?

Isn’t that why we elect a State Auditor, to avoid these conflicts of interest?

Nice. I’ll add “financial miscues” to my list of euphemisms that have been used to describe the whoopsies:

Would this be the same Deloitte being sued for missing the signs of massive fraud elsewhere? http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/26/us-deloitte-mortgage-idUSTRE78P51E20110926
Yet, the State hires them again and again. Is this a case of “if you want to find a criminal, hire a criminal?”
I also agree with Nick’s comment that Horst and the OMB should NOT be involved in this investigation — at any level.
