Sen. Leising has introduced SB 320 which would require the 2014 general election ballot to include a public question asking, “Should the Indiana high school basketball tournament be played under a single class system?” The results would be non-binding.
I am an unapologetic supporter of the One True Basketball Tournament, but even I think this is a waste of time. If the General Assembly wants to do this, just take the money that would be spent on the ballot measure and hire a reputable polling outfit with a recent history of accuracy (e.g. not Gallup or Rasmussen). Then burn the results for as much as the IHSAA will care.

Could it be that these people have trouble honing in on the purpose of a short legislative session? Bad sign about how it’s going to turn out.

Another topic that the legislature should not be even considering. On the topic, have no problem with the current system having observed both and know the smaller schools will likely never pull off another Milan or Hickory. Thus why not simply have a playoff of the four state champions. This would keep alive hope for the A team to beat the 4A team.
I favor a stamp tax, or series of escalating fines, on making horrible decisions and then defending them in public with specious arguments. This would quickly bankrupt the IHSAA and most school districts, solving the problem altogether.
I would have hoped that the IHSAA would “man up” and just say that class basketball serves them best, not the students or the fans. They just don’t seem to be able to face the music over padding their own résumés and dumpster diving for performance bonuses.
Class basketball serves the people that matter most. The students and the athletes that actually play the sport instead of misty-brained bench Warner’s and student managers.
